Extensive track work is being carried out on the heavily used western section between St. Valentin and Linz Kleinmünchen. The ballast bed is being completely renewed in several sections over a total length of around three kilometres, and ten points are also being repaired. The work is being deliberately bundled in order to complete it quickly and efficiently and minimise disruption to train services. Special large construction machines are being used for the realisation. The total investment for these measures is around 4 million euros.
Effects on long-distance and local transport
Due to the construction work, there will be extensive timetable adjustments to long-distance services: All ÖBB and Westbahn long-distance trains will be rerouted via Enns, resulting in changed departure and arrival times east of Linz. The journey time between Linz and Vienna will be extended by around ten minutes in both directions.
Some trains on the RJX line travelling in the direction of Linz will not stop in Vienna Meidling. Only the two-hourly RJX line to Munich/Bregenz is affected. The stops of these trains in Vienna Central Station will be shortened and there will be no stops at all in Vienna Meidling in order to compensate for the longer journey time between Vienna and Linz caused by the construction work. Even during the construction work, there will be regular direct connections with a stop in Vienna Meidling (including ICs, RJX line to Zurich).
In addition, timetable changes are necessary on the Vienna Central Station - Vienna Airport and Vienna Central Station - Budapest/Bratislava routes. Night transport is also affected, which is why Nightjet and EuroNight trains will have to be adjusted. In local transport, trains on the S1 line between St. Valentin and Linz Central Station will continue to run every hour, but the half-hourly service will only be guaranteed until 8 a.m. There will also be timetable changes on the REX33 line between St. Nikola-Struden and Linz Central Station. In Lower Austria, there will be timetable changes on the CJX5 Vienna Westbahnhof - Amstetten line.
Connections
The connections in St. Valentin, Amstetten and St. Pölten Hbf will also change. Some of the connections between long-distance and local services cannot be reached . This will increase the overall journey time.
Trains on the Donauuferbahn (St. Valentin - St. Nikola-Struden), the Rudolfsbahn (St. Valentin/Amstetten - Kleinreifling) and connections at the St. Pölten Hbf junction (Traisentalbahn, Tullnerfelder Bahn, Nahverkehr Weststrecke) are affected. In addition to the train service, the OÖVV regional bus service of lines 360 and 361 Linz Hbf - Mauthausen is available to passengers of the Donauuferbahn.
