As part of European Mobility Week 2025, the pilot phase of the Öffi-Packerl research project led by Fraunhofer Austria in Upper Austria ended with a closing event at the parcel station in Ried im Innkreis.
Three parcel stations were installed in Ried im Innkreis, Andorf and Schärding, allowing passengers to pick up parcels during their regular journeys on public transport. Customers have already successfully completed over 150 transports (equivalent to the daily volume of a parcel delivery service) - clear proof of the concept's suitability for everyday use.
We support the project in the course of selecting the bus routes and informed our customers about the test operation. The municipalities have provided the space for the parcel stations. The regional representatives draw a positive balance: in Ried im Innkreis, the innovative contribution to sustainability is emphasised, in Andorf the regional added value for the surrounding communities is also emphasised, and in Schärding the parcel station is seen as an opportunity to reduce delivery traffic and sustainably increase the quality of life.
The aim of the Öffi-Packerl project was to develop a platform that links free transport capacity on public transport with parcels. In addition to the specially developed app, the innovative, solar-powered parcel stations also played a central role. These enable secure and flexible interim storage without a connection to the power grid. The project aims to make a significant contribution to reducing greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions on the urban and rural last mile.
