Many people think of the mountains and lakes in the Salzkammergut when they think of leisure trips by public transport. However, decelerated leisure activities by bus and train are possible throughout Upper Austria. For example, the marvellous natural sites of the Feldaist and Waldaist in the Mühlviertel are easy to reach with the OÖVV regional buses.
In Hohensteg (south of the town of Pregarten), the Feldaist and Waldaist rivers join to form the Aist. This is also the central starting point of a highly recommended public transport hike by the Bahn zum Berg association, which departs from the bus stop "Tragwein Mistlberg Pfahnlmühle" stopfour hours along the Aist and back to Pregarten railway station. The route is accessible almost all year round and mostly runs along forest and meadow paths or goods and gravel roads.
The first short section from the "Tragwein Mistlberg Pfahnlmühle" bus stop to the junction at the signpost for the Hohensteg bathing area is still along the main road, after which you turn onto a meadow path in the direction of the Waldluftbadeweg. After the bridge over the Feldaist, in addition to the yellow Waldluftbade signposts, the red and white markings of hiking trail 170 also point the way.
A wayside shrine along the way marks the correct turn-off to the village of Aist. Once you have passed through this village, the beautiful Feldaisttal nature reserve with its various fascinating watercourses and impressive rock formations opens up immediately afterwards. Some places invite you to linger and swim. So make sure you pack your swimming gear on a nice day! The small, fine natural bathing spots can also be explored barefoot.
The adventure trail in the Feldaisttal nature reserve runs along the river for around 2.5 kilometres until the path separates from the Feldaist at Klausmühle. After around one kilometre on a tarmac road, you finally reach the end point of the tour after four hours - the train station or bus stop in Pregarten. If you wish, you can combine the tour with a detour to the nearby town centre of Pregarten .
Deceleration and pure nature
The Feldaisttal nature reserve offers ideal opportunities for "forest bathing". This refers to mindful, close contact with nature, which has been proven to lead to more deceleration, greater joie de vivre and new energy reserves. The power of centuries-old trees, imposing rock formations and the mighty sound of the river - sometimes thunderously loud, sometimes quieter - invite you to switch off and "enjoy with all your senses". Combined with the convenient and environmentally friendly public transport journey to and from the destination, hikers save themselves the trip back to the car and the often uncertain search for a parking space. A public transport hiking trip to the Wald- und Feldaisttal is therefore ideal for anyone who wants to get out of the city quickly and enjoy nature without restrictions.
